Fragile Freedom

Message/Experiment of the Week:

Why is freedom so precious, rare and fragile? When people have power, it is very rare that they willingly give it up, which is why the freedom we have in the western world is such a precious, rare and fragile thing. The miracle of 1776 truly was a miracle.

People like Vladimir Putin and Lord Voldemort remind us how fragile freedom can be and bring to mind the following passage from Harry Potter:

“In the light of Lord Voldemort’s return, we are only as strong as we are united, as weak as we are divided. Lord Voldemort’s gift for spreading discord and enmity is very great. We can fight it only by showing an equally strong bond of friendship and trust. Differences of habit and language are nothing at all if our aims are identical and our hearts are open.

“It is my belief – and never have I so hoped that I am mistaken – that we are all facing dark and difficult times. Some of you in this Hall have already suffered directly at the hands of Lord Voldemort. Many of your families have been torn asunder. A week ago, a student was taken from our midst.

“Remember Cedric. Remember, if the time should come when you have to make a choice between what is right and what is easy, remember what happened to a boy who was good, and kind, and brave, because he strayed across the path of Lord Voldemort. Remember Cedric Diggory.”

For an experiment this week, think of people you know who protect our freedom and thank at least one of them. Also, check-out the quotes and videos below from heroes who chose what was right instead of what was easy in the fight for freedom and human dignity.

Quotes of the Week:

  • “Listen, I’ve got something very obvious to tell you. You’re not allowed to give up. If they decide to kill me, it means that we are incredibly strong. We need to utilize this power, to not give up, to remember that we are a huge power, that is being repressed by these bad dudes. We don’t realize how strong we actually are. The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good people to do nothing. So don’t be inactive.”Alexei Navalny, response to question about what he wanted people know if he was killed

  • “They may torture my body, break my bones, even kill me. Then they will have my dead body, but not my obedience.” —Mahatma Gandhi

  • “I'm not afraid of anything that might happen to me on this earth, because I know no matter what, nothing can take my spirit from me.” — Adam Brown
