Making Things Work

Message/Experiment of the Week:

How often are you willing cooperate with other people to make things work for everyone? Often it is tempting to say that things need to be your way or the highway, which makes it hard to cooperate and figure out solutions that works for everyone. Instead, you need to be clear about what you want by speaking with passion in an honest fashion about what you want and encouraging others to do the same. You may even be able find a solution like Tom Sawyer did in Mark Twain’s novel when he recruited the kids in town to paint a fence for him. 🙂

In the video below Dr. Thomas Henschel explains how you can better cooperate with others and find win-win solutions using the four Harvard Principles of Negotiation: 1. separate the person from the issue, 2. focus on what each party is interested in, 3. develop criteria that the solution must fulfill for each party, 4. give each party several options.

For an experiment this week, look for ways to cooperate with people to find solutions that work for everyone instead of dictating what must be done.

Quote of the Week:

  • “Win-win is about constantly seeking mutual benefit in all human interactions—about finding solutions that are truly beneficial and satisfying for everyone involved. To go for win-win, we not only have to be empathic, but we also have to be confident. We not only have to be considerate and sensitive, we also have to be brave.” Habit 4: Think Win-Win | The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People®
