Wanting What You've Got

Message/Experiment of the Week:

If getting what you want makes you happy, then isn’t the key to happiness and joy simply wanting what you’ve got? As Sheryl Crow says “It’s not having what you want. It’s wanting what you’ve got.”

You will never be able to get everything you want every moment, but you can want what you have every moment and marvel joyfully at the amazingness of life unfolding around you. By simply preferring things the way they are you can joyfully embrace every moment. Instead of wishing the weather or another person would change you can joyfully embrace both the way they are. The weather doesn’t bother you, you bother yourself about the weather.

Michael Singer does a great job of explaining the joy that is always available to you by wanting what you’ve got in the video below and in his book Untethered Soul. Wanting what you’ve got and also being open to ways to make things even better allows you to enjoy life and be your best self.

For an experiment this week, focus on wanting what you’ve got and see what happens.

Quotes of the Week:

  • “There is nothing more important to true growth than realizing that you are not the voice of the mind - you are the one who hears it.” — Michael A. Singer, The Untethered Soul: A Journey Beyond Yourself

  • Fear is the cause of every problem. It’s the root of all prejudices and the negative emotions of anger, jealousy, and possessiveness. If you had no fear, you could be perfectly happy living in this world.” — Michael A. Singer, The Untethered Soul: A Journey Beyond Yourself

  • “Billions of things could happen that you haven’t even thought of yet. The question is not whether they will happen. Things are going to happen. The real question is whether you want to be happy regardless of what happens.” — Michael A. Singer, The Untethered Soul: A Journey Beyond Yourself

  • “In truth, pain is the price of freedom. And the moment you are willing to pay that price, you will no longer be afraid. The moment you are not afraid of the pain, you’ll be able to face all of life’s situations without fear.” — Michael A. Singer, The Untethered Soul: A Journey Beyond Yourself

  • “What if you knew that the next person you’d see would be the last person you would ever see? You’d be right there soaking it in, experiencing it. It wouldn’t matter what they were saying; you’d just enjoy hearing the words because it would be the last conversation you’d ever have. What if you brought that kind of awareness to every conversation?” — Michael A. Singer, The Untethered Soul: The Journey Beyond Yourself
